Former president Barack Obama and Elkhart’s unemployment rate

ELKHART, Ind.—In 2016, then-president Barack Obama visited Concord High School in Elkhart to speak about the economy.

Throughout Obama’s presidency, Elkhart’s unemployment rate dropped. In 2009, it was 19.6 percent and in 2016, it was 4.1 percent.

During the speech, Obama said Elkhart was a good place to start the conversation about the economy and he last visited the city just three weeks after first taking office.

Obama used his speech to respond to big topics relating to the government, including over-regulation, immigration, and big government.

He also told the audience that the housing market, RV industry, and overall economy had rebounded.
