Former ISP Sgt. Tim McCarthy, a Notre Dame game day legend, dies at 89

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Notre Dame community is mourning the loss of former Indiana State Police Sergeant Tim McCarthy. His safety messages have become a game day tradition.

Sergeant McCarthy died last week at the age of 89.

He started delivering the traffic safety announcements in 1960 and appeared at every Irish home game until he retired in 2015.

McCarthy’s voice continues to be a part of the game day atmosphere.

Recorded versions of his traffic safety messages are still played in Notre Dame Stadium between the third and fourth quarters.
