Fatal shooting investigation underway in Benton Township

BENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Officers responded to reports of someone being shot on Saturday at Briarwood Apartments, located at 1953 Union Street, according to the Benton Charter Township Police Department.

Deputies with the Berrien County Sheriff's Office arrived first on the scene and located an individual suffering from multiple gunshot wounds laying on the walkway of 1957 Union Street.

Officials attempted to administer life-saving measures, but EMS arrived and determined that the victim was dead.

Upon further investigation of the scene, officers determined that the victim has been shot on the second floor of the building, dragged down the stairs and then left on the walkway, according to police.

After canvasing the neighboring apartments and speaking with witnesses, officers determined that the victim may have had a previous relationship with Michael Delaney, according to officials.

Police say that Delaney is a person of interest, although his whereabouts are unknown.
