COURT DOCS: Elkhart teacher describes meetup with teen as 'Grindr hookup'
Elkhart County Jail UPDATE: ABC57 has obtained the probable cause affidavit for Elkhart middle school teacher Donald Shafer, which reveals alleged details leading up to the sex crime charges involving a minor.
Documents reveal on Wednesday around 3 a.m., an officer with the Goshen Police Department was conducting a routine patrol in the parking lot of Shanklin Park when he noticed a Chevrolet passenger car parked with the lights off and windows fogged.
Documents state the officer approached the car and found an older man, Shafer, and a teen in the backseat.
Shafer was read his Miranda Rights before telling the officer he and the teen were just talking. When questioned further, Shafer told the officer they were discussing school issues the teen was having. Shafer also claimed he didn't know the teen's name and that he'd picked the teen up from the library before coming to the park.
Shafer informed the officer he was a teacher at West Side Middle School and that he met the teen at a school function, specifically basketball.
Shafer was then taken to the Goshen Police Department for further questioning, during which he stated the meetup with the teen was actually a "Grindr hookup." Grindr is a social media dating app primarily used by LGBTQ+ individuals. The affidavit also states Shafer admitted to performing a sex act on the teen.
The teen victim was interviewed by investigators and stated he met Shafer on Grindr. The victim stated the two sent nude images to each other through the app.
The victim corroborated Shafer performed a sex act on him.
When Shafer noticed the police were outside the car, the victim said he told him to tell police they were both adults. The victim said Shafer then asked if he was 18.
The victim said he was afraid to tell Shafer no.

Elkhart Community Schools released the following statement to ABC57 News regarding the arrest:
"On Wednesday, February 11, our district was contacted by the Goshen Police Department, which is investigating a potential criminal matter involving one of our teachers and a former student at Elkhart Community Schools.
Immediately after we were contacted, we placed the teacher in question on paid administrative leave for violating our district's policy regarding inappropriate conduct with a student and are now cooperating with the police department in its investigation. Obviously, this is an extremely disturbing matter - one that involves the safety and security of our students - and we have made it a priority for our administrative staff.
Because this is a highly sensitive personnel matter and a police investigation, we will not be providing any other public comment at this time."
