Elkhart police stop man reportedly driving himself to hospital with head wound

ELKHART, Ind. – Police stopped a man who was reportedly driving himself to the hospital with a head wound on Friday night, the Elkhart Police Department reported.

At 8:23 p.m., an officer was called to the 100 block of Freight Street for a report of a battery that had just happened.

While on the way to the scene, the officer was told that the victim left in a Mercedes SUV and was possibly headed towards Elkhart General Hospital.

The officer found the vehicle and pulled it over.

When the officer approached the driver’s door, he found a male bleeding heavily from the left side of his head just above his ear.

The male said that he was struck in the head with a gun, reports said.

The officer escorted the victim to the hospital.

The victim further reported that a black male in his late teens/early 20s approached him in the parking lot along Freight Street and pointed a handgun at him, according to reports.

The victim grabbed for the gun and began to fight with the male.

The victim said that the male then ran towards S. Main Street and that he didn’t see where he went.

No arrests have been made.

This incident is still under investigation.
