St. Joseph County Jail

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- An Elkhart man will spend over three decades in prison for a crash that left a man dead and a woman severely injured.

39-year-old Bobby Young was convicted on two felonies: Causing Death when Operating a Vehicle with a Schedule I or II Controlled Substance in the Blood and Causing Serious Bodily Injury when Operating a Vehicle with a Schedule I or II Substance in the Blood.

The crash happened in August 2024 at the intersection of Locust and Ireland Roads in South Bend. Police say 50-year-old Kenneth Calhoun II and 30-year-old Heather Miller were riding on a motorcycle when Young hit them in his Ford Fiesta. Calhoun died and Miller was taken to the hospital with a traumatic brain injury.

Young told investigators that he consumed meth a few days before the crash. A blood draw later showed he had both meth and amphetamine in his system.

His total sentence is 32 years.
