Branch falling on electrical line suspected cause in fatal Thursday morning fire

WAVERLY TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A woman is dead following a housefire early Thursday morning in Van Buren County.

The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office reports dispatch received a 911 call about a housefire at around 5:46 a.m., Thursday, in the 35000 block of 36th Avenue in Waverly Township.

Deputies and the Paw Paw Fire Department responded to the scene to find the home engulfed in fire.

Officials soon learned an elderly woman lived alone in the house.

Firefighters initiated a search of the home and located the woman, who was found to be dead.

The Michigan State Police Fire Marshal is assisting with the investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

The report states preliminary findings indicate a tree branch fell onto an electrical line, causing the fire.

Authorities say no foul play is suspected.

The victim's identity is withheld pending next of kin notification.
