Elkhart announces mixed-use development project at South Main and Freight Street

ELKHART, Ind. -- The City of Elkhart announced a mixed-use development at South Main and Freight Street will bring new housing, commercial space, and the creation of Love Plaza.

The plaza will honor the legacy of Kelby Love with a sculptural re-creation of his beloved mural.

The project will add more than 200 housing units, activate new retail space, enhance the South Main gateway, and bring investment to the Benham Neighborhood.

Housing will serve individuals earning at or below 80 percent of Area Median Income, with rent ranging from $500 to $1,600.

This project reflects the city’s commitment to investing in quality of place developments and neighborhoods.

Construction is anticipated to begin in Summer 2026
