EFD Captain Adam 'Pugsley' Kuspa passes away Monday morning

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Fire Department confirmed to ABC57 that Captain Adam "Pugsley" Kuspa was found unresponsive at his home Monday morning.

Kuspa subsequently passed away. He was only 41 years old.

Several local fire departments described Kuspa as a highly respected firefighter and instructor.

Kuspa was a member of Elkhart Firefighters Local 338 and served as a fireman for 19 years.

The EFD has placed a black ribbon around one of their firetrucks as a symbol of mourning.

Statement from Mayor Rod Roberson, City of Elkhart:

"It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Captain Adam Kuspa, a dedicated 19-year veteran of the Elkhart Fire Department. Our hearts are with Captain Kuspa's family, friends and colleagues at the Elkhart Fire Department.

Captain Kuspa embodied the true spirit of public service and heroism as a member of the Elkhart Fire Department, and for that our community will be eternally grateful."
