Driver charged with attempted murder after serious crash

BENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A driver who allegedly intentionally crashed his vehicle in an attempt to harm himself and his passenger was taken into custody on preliminary charges of attempted murder, according to Benton Charter Township Police.

Police were called to the 1600 block of Kay Drive in reference to a suicidal subject Tuesday evening around 9:15 p.m.

When police arrived they saw a Jeep Cherokee speed from the scene, reports said.

Another officer spotted the Cherokee driving recklessly on S. Euclid. It continued to swerve in and out of traffic, passing vehicles and continued driving recklessly, police said.

At Euclid and E. Britain, the vehicle crashed into a high voltage power line antenna tower.

The driver had a cut to his wrist and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

His passenger was wedged into the seat and had to be extricated from the vehicle by firefighters. She was taken to the hospital for treatment of chest and back injuries.

Police said they learned during the investigation that the driver, Yoshurn McClinton had intentionally crashed the vehicle in an attempt to harm himself and his passenger, police said.

McClinton was taken to the Berrien County Jail on a preliminary charge of attempted murder and an alcohol offense, police said.
