Douglas Road closed near Ironwood Road beginning March 20
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - A section of Douglas Road, near Ironwood Road, will close on Monday for ongoing construction in the area, according to the St. Joseph County Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Growth.
This closure is for Phase III of construction that began in April 2022 on Douglas between Ivy Road and State Road 23.
During this phase, Douglas will be closed to traffic between Ironwood and Carmichael Drive for the installation of storm sewer pipe and drainage structures, an underground storm water detention system and other work.
The phase also includes widening part of Douglas Road to the south, requiring subgrade stabilization, concrete curbs and gutters, concrete driveway approaches and asphalt paving.
Crews will also remove the existing bridge over Juday Creek and install a new replacement structure.
Phase III is expected to wrap up by October 16, 2023, at which point crews will move into Phase IV, completing the widening of Douglas from Carmichael Drive to S.R. 23.
Details of Phase IV will be addressed at a later date.
There will be no passage on Douglas east from Ironwood or west from S.R. 23. while the bridge is out, other than for residents and emergency response personnel for residents in the area.
Anyone who tries to cut through the area risks the doubling of fines per Indiana Department of Transportation Standards.
Detour routes will be posted in the area to use Ironwood and S.R. 23 to the south and north and Cleveland Road as the east and west connector.
