NOW: La Porte County fair organizers adjust for heat and haze

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The smoke blowing south from Canadian wildfires, mixed with our high heat and humidity has created a thick haze in the air, and that haze can be seen, smelled, and even tasted, at times, all over Michiana.

That air is not healthy for humans, farm animals, or even pets.

Heat is something La Porte County Fair organizers are used to, but the haze is a new problem.

From food vendors, to fairgoers, everyone is trying to find different ways to enjoy the fair on its 180th anniversary.

ABC57 spoke with Dr. Clinte Shireman, the fair's veterinarian, who tells me that they've taken precautions to make sure the livestock is safe.

"We make sure ventilation is the key to most of our barns and especially in the livestock related area, to try and keep air flow coming through there as much as possible and making sure the water is clean so as far as with the haze and what not, we're going to encourage keeping box fans and whatever precautions we need to do there, as well as, if needed, we can filter that air a little bit," said Dr. Shireman.

Despite the haze, fair organizers tell ABC57 that no activities have been canceled, and Thursday's Dylan Scott concert will take place as planned.
