Discover Archaeology in Action at Fort St. Joseph

Western Michigan University

NILES, Mich. -- Fort St. Joseph will be hosting the annual Archaeology Open House which be held on the weekend of Saturday, Aug. 2 and Sunday, Aug. 3. The event is free and open to the public 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The focus on this year's open house will be on the later French period and the theme is 'Resurgence: Expanding Trade in New France'.

"We wanted to explore the time when more people are coming to trade and settle at the Fort. This coincides with our recent research efforts to determine the exact boundaries of the Fort itself. We know where six of the fort buildings are located, however, this would not be enough to house the entire population at the time. Each artifact that we uncover helps tell the story of who once lived at the post and how they were
utilizing the area of Fort St. Joseph, " said Director Erika Hartley.

The open house will also feature reenactors as well.
