Deceased driver in fatal Elkhart Police pursuit identified

ELKHART, Ind.—The deceased driver involved in the fatal police pursuit in Elkhart on Sunday has been identified.

Michael Mattox, 31, of Elkhart’s preliminary cause of death is listed as blunt force injuries.

According to the Elkhart County Prosecutor, the incident on June 9 began as a domestic battery and strangulation investigation when Mattox took the victim’s car.

After receiving suspect information from dispatch, officers responding to a 911 call at the scene of the domestic battery incident spotted the suspect and vehicle around 4:55 a.m. in the 200 block of Morehouse.

A pursuit by police began and ended when the vehicle collided with a parked car, a landscape planter and then finally the Post Office in the 600 block of S. Main St., according to Elkhart Police.

Mattox, the driver, was found to be unresponsive and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
