Continuing tornado recovery efforts in Elkhart, 24-hour shelter and resources available

ELKHART, Ind. -- Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson has released a statement regarding the continuing recovery efforts following the tornado that touched down on the morning of Tuesday, July 16.

Roberson's statement reads in part:

"Recovery from the tornado that came through Elkhart in the early morning hours of Tuesday is ongoing. I continue to be blown away by the dedication, expertise, and calm demonstrated by our staff. This has been an all hands on deck effort and we are all dedicated to getting our residents back to normal as soon as possible.

As of this afternoon, the Red Cross has opened a shelter at Concord West Side Elementary. Offering 24-hour shelter and resources for those impacted."

Roberson goes on to state I&M is still estimating most power to be restored by 6 p.m., Monday.

The mayor adds city crews are still removing storm debris.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security is also accepting damage reports in Elkhart County, according to State Sen. Linda Rogers (R-Granger). 

The reports should be for damage caused by the severe storm and tornado.

Residents should contact Indiana 211 at (866) 211-9966 or visit the Indiana 211 website.

 "The Indiana 211 system is an excellent way to receive assistance from the state on damages caused by extreme weather," Rogers said. "Collecting this data will help the IDHS determine damage estimates and further plan the recovery process. If you or someone you know has been impacted by the storms, please use the 211 system to report damage and learn about the resources that may be available to you."

State officials also warn residents with home or property damage to be aware of scammers.

Officials say residents can verify if a visitor is a trusted representative of the city or county by calling (574) 293-2175.
