NOW: Community concerned after shooting on South Carlisle Street leaves one dead

SOUTH BEND, Ind - Residents are sharing their concerns after a shooting in South Bend on Sunday took the life of one man.

The victim died from his injuries less than a day after the incident.

"We have kids around all the time and they’re drinking. I don’t know, it’s really bad with guns and I don’t know why they have permission and the people getting guns, it’s really bad for all the people," said Maria Herrera, a resident of South Bend.

Police were called to the shooting in the 400 block of South Carlisle Street just before 8 p.m.

Though they have not released the victim's name, we know he was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The tragedy has left the neighborhood shaken, with some mothers expressing fear for their young children.

"And now I'm worried because I have four kids and you know, this is my room and I'm close to the window and I'm scared cause they don’t tell you what time they’re coming," said Maria Herrera, another South Bend resident.

Another mother echoed the same concerns, especially because she has young children.

"I'm just concerned for the community because ever since, everybody has pretty much been having guns to solve situations. It always seems to be in the wrong hands and unfortunately, we have to worry about if it's one of our kids," said South Bend resident Tera Lawson.

Lawson said it's even more upsetting that this tragedy happened on Mother's Day.

"This situation occurred on Mother's Day of all days. I mean imagine that person's mom that’s just, I as a mother, I would never want to hear something like that, and you know my heart goes out to the mothers out here in our community that must deal with certain things like this... It's heartbreaking," she said.

The South Bend Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit is currently investigating the shooting.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Michiana Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP.
