LAKE STATION, Ind. -- At least 28 crates filled with live chickens sat scattered across the I-80 eastbound ramp to I-90 Tuesday morning after a truck transporting them collided with a concrete median wall.

Indiana State Police say they received reports around 10:50 a.m., of a Volvo truck crashing on the ramp around mile-marker 15, scattering chickens across the road.

Troopers arrived to find the crates, each holding about eight chickens, and loose live chickens walking across the ramp lane.

Police moved the crates to safety on the right shoulder of the roadway.

The truck responsible for the incident had left the scene prior to ISP's arrival.

Dozens of chickens did die as a result of the crates falling onto the road.

Troopers captured the surviving loose chickens. Officials with the Indiana Toll Road also responded to the scene and transported the chickens to a shaded area at their facility. Lake County Animal Control, the Humane Society, and the Region I Rescue Team later arrived and took the chickens for proper care and handling.

Investigators say evidence shows the truck hauling the chickens struck the concrete median wall, causing the crates to fall off.

Anyone with information regarding the owner of the truck and/or the chickens is asked to contact Trooper Garcia at the ISP Lowell Post at 219‑696‑6242.

The crash remains under investigation
