Changes coming to St. Joseph County Council meetings in 2026

ABC 57

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Council announced they've voted to change when meetings will take place beginning in January 2026.

Council officials say committee meetings will now be scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month, while regular meetings with public hearings will be the fourth Tuesday of the month.

Previously, the schedule was reversed.

Officials say both meetings each month will now start at 6 p.m.

The council cites the old schedule as confusing for some, noting sometimes petitioners didn't know when to return for a public hearing.

Officials added following county election years on the old schedule, new council members were voting on bills already filed and completed by the committee process before they'd even been sworn into office.

The new schedule will allow another council committee meeting in January 2026 before the regular meeting and public hearing.

Petitions for land use, zoning, code book amendments, and resolutions will continue being sent to the Executive Secretary of the County Council.

Officials say these filing submissions are now due no later than noon on Tuesday prior to either the council’s committee meeting or public hearing.

If that Tuesday is a holiday, the deadline is moved to noon Monday.

Officials also say due to a change in Indiana Code, budget amendments and salary requests will now be posted on the Indiana Gateway website to meet the 10-day notice requirements mandated within state law.

The council states these items will still be published locally, but only with all other council agenda items for public notice.

If you have any questions, you're asked to contact the St. Joseph County Council Executive Secretary, Jennifer Prawat via email at [email protected] or phone at (574)235-9658.
