BENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Multiple agencies were called to Blossom Acres Apartments in Benton Township on Monday night for reports of heavy smoke coming from a structure.

Fire crews say a call for assistance came in at 7:58 p.m. on March 17 and firefighters responded to the 100 block of Concord Road where they found smoke coming from the first floor of an apartment building.

Entry was made through the rear door, and the source of the smoke was quickly determined to be a closet in a first-floor bedroom.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before the fire took off, but the building suffered decent smoke damage.

The cause of the fire was determined to be two minors who confessed to authorities that they were playing with matches and caused the fire.

While no humans were injured, one cat was found dead. It is believed it died from smoke inhalation.

Power, water, and gas to the building was cut and fans were brought in to help ventilate the structure once the fire was out.
