ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The Saint Joseph County Fire Territory responded to reports of a vehicle sinking through the ice in Chain-O-Lakes around 2:45 a.m. Saturday.
County fire units arrived to find the vehicle actively sinking through the ice.
Crews performed rescue tactics to search for any passengers but found none. The St. Joseph County Police Department's dive team also confirmed no one was in the vehicle or submerged in the ice.
Firefighters say the incident serves as an important reminder that ice conditions are unpredictable, even if they appear solid on the surface.
St. Joseph County Police are now handling the investigation.
