South Bend Police were called to a home on S. Meade Street after ShotSpotter reported 27 gunshots in the area around 1:30 a.m. on June 6.

Officers who responded located 27 spent 9 mm and .40-caliber shell casings in the middle of the street and one spent casing on the sidewalk, reports said.

At 1:35 a.m., an officer responded to a home at N. Carlisle Street for a man with a gunshot wound. The victim had suffered a gunshot wound to his torso and was transported to the hospital.

Ten minutes later, another officer responded to a home on N. Brookfield Street for a man who had also been shot in the torso. He was transported to the hospital.

The Brookfield Street victim told police before the shooting he had been in Mishawaka with his brother and the victim from the Carlisle Street address, reports said.

He said they had been driving in their car and it had broken down, so they got a ride to South Bend from a man in a van, reports said.

The man drove them to a home on Meade Street, where there was a crowd of people outside, reports said.

Two men, Steven Gaines and Stefon Gaines, approached the van and wanted to know why the men were there and accused one of the men of shooting up the Meade Street home several days earlier, reports said.

Then, Steven and Stefon pulled out guns and began shooting at them, according to the probable cause affidavit.

The driver of the van sped away, then dropped off the victims a short distance from the Meade Street address, reports said.

Both men will be in court for a bail hearing on June 11.
