Bridge to close until December in Mishawaka

ABC 57

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Mishawka city officials announced the Cedar Street Bridge over the St. Joseph River will close on Monday, July 8, at 9 a.m., and reopen December 1.

Officials add this is for the first phase of scheduled maintenance and construction of the riverwalk expansion, which is vital for connecting the north and south side of the riverwalk.

The project includes new bridge decking with its expansion to accept the widened multi-use pathway on the west side of bridge.

It also includes constructing the riverwalk pathway under the bridge with access stairs from Edgewater Drive on the east side of the bridge, a new connection at Marvin’s Garden, upgraded lighting, upgraded railings, new Cedar Street flashing pedestrian crossing, and St. Joseph County bridge maintenance.

Utilities will also be relocated over the winter in conjunction with the bridge being available for traffic use.

Weather permitting and pending when utilities are completely relocated, the second phase of construction will close the bridge again April 1, 2025, and reopen upon project completion September 2025.

Barricades and signage will be in place to direct motorists to the Main Street Bridge using Lincolnway East and Mishawaka Avenue as a detour.
