Regional Jet and Blackhawk helicopter collide in mid-air, unknown casualties
UPDATE (11:38 p.m.): The Associated Press reports that flight tracking audio shows no response from the helicopter after air traffic control warning.
Inflatable rescue boats were being launched into the Potomac River from a point near the airport along the George Washington Parkway, just north of the airport.
The FAA says the midair collision occurred around 9 p.m. eastern, with 64 people confirmed on board the jet, American Airlines flight 5342, and three soldiers confirmed aboard the helicopter.
UPDATE (10:55 p.m.): President Donald Trump has released in a statement stating, “I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident which just took place at Reagan National Airport. May God Bless their souls. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise.”
WASHINGTON. -- The FAA has stated that a regional jet and a military Blackhawk helicopter have been involved in a mid-air collision near the Reagan National Airport tonight.
The FAA has issued a ground stop at the airport until further notice.
EMS and DC Fire have both confirmed that an aircraft was down in the river.
It has been stated by the FAA that PSA Airlines was operating the flight for American Airlines. The FAA states that the plane had departed from Wichita Kansas and was approaching the runway upon the collision.
A search and rescue operation is now underway.
This crash will be under investigation.
