BREAKING: Juvenile shot in Mishawaka alley Wednesday morning, nearby schools secured
MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- The Mishawaka Police Department has confirmed that a 16-year-old boy shot on Wednesday morning in a Mishawaka alley.
MPD says the call came in around 10:45 a.m. from another juvenile and it appears a group of kids were walking in the alley near Jackson and Panama Streets, in Mishawaka, when one of them was shot.
"Information is sketchy/limited at this time," authorities said. "We know that a 16-year-old male was walking in an alley near the intersection with one or two other juveniles. At some point in the alley, he was shot once in the abdomen. There was no exit wound. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. There is no description of any possible suspect at this time."
The intersection is north of Marian High School, west of South Logan Street.
School City of Mishawaka says LaSalle Elementary is currently locked down per the police investigation.
"We're conducting the investigation now speaking to witnesses to try to determine what happened, but it appears that it is now a secure scene with no additional threat to the neighborhood," Mishawaka Police Chief Alex Arendt said.
"Initially, we did place the schools on lockdown that were in the immediate area, being Marion High School and La Salle elementary that has since been lifted as far as the lockdown goes, and now we're just starting to begin on the investigation, speaking with witnesses and processing the scene for evidence."
MPD has confirmed the victim was not a student in Mishawaka.
"The school is on what is called Secure Status, which means no one can come in or go out because of the nearby shooting until they hear from local law enforcement that all is clear," Marion High School administrators said at the time.
He victim's condition has been listed as stable, authorities said.
Anyone with information can contact the Mishawaka Police Department Detective Bureau at 574-258-1684, and
