UPDATE: 'White powder' that caused sixth floor of County-City Building evacuation deemed not a threat

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- UPDATE 1:38 p.m.: Officials with the St. Joseph County Commissioners report that the “white powder” was tested by the hazmat team and determined not to be a threat.

 The commissioners also released the following statement:

"The County Commissioners appreciate and thank the quick and appropriate response by St Joseph County Personnel, the South Bend Hazmat Team and Police Department"

The road has also reopened.

UPDATE: The South Bend Police Department reports both they and the South Bend Fire Department responded to the County-City Building in downtown South Bend for reported discovery of a suspicious substance on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say ss a precaution, the sixth floor has been evacuated as the investigation continues by SBFD's HAZMAT Team.

Authorities say one person has been taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The initial report states this incident remains under investigation.

Police say if you are planning to visit the County-City Building Wednesday afternoon, to be aware that emergency vehicles will be on-scene until the it's been officially cleared.

ORIGIINAL STORY: The sixth floor of the St. Joseph County building that doubles as the South Bend City building is being evacuated early Wednesday afternoon after authorities found a "white powder substance" on the sixth floor while handling incoming mail.

Police, fire, and hazmat teams are on scene to address the incident.

"There is no known threat to staff at this time," authorities said. "The sixth floor has been evacuated as a precaution."
