The incident happened around 5:45 p.m. CST Monday June 22. Investigators say the teenager went into the water with a group of friends at Washington Park Beach. The victim began struggling in the water; his friends unsuccessfully tried to help him. Officials believe he was pulled under by a rip current.
Officials say the area of the beach where this happened is typically guarded, but lifeguards were off duty for the day at that time.
DNR officials say that, at the time of the incident, there was a 20 mile-per-hour wind. A beach hazard statement and a small craft advisory were in effect from the National Weather Service.
Multiple divers were injured during the search due to conditions on the water.
