SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- I know people are excited to get their garden started this year, but there are some things you need to know before you get started. The soil actually determines when you should break out that green thumb.
I spoke with Mark Evans, Agriculture, Natural Resources Educator, and Dan Carlson, Master Gardener, both from the Purdue Extension Office in Elkhart. They gave lots of information and the steps you need to take to start your garden this season.
If you want more information about planning, gardening, or even upcoming spring programs, you can reach out to the Purdue Extension Office of Elkhart County online or over the phone at (574) 533-0554.
We can’t have plants without bees. Bees play a very important role in plant and flower growth. Bees will soon make their debut this spring, but the question is, when? Morgan Carr-Markell, an Assistant Biology Professor at Saint Mary’s College gave all the buzz on bee emergence, behavior, and roles they play in the spring.
To aid in better pollination for bees, planting diverse flowers and plants will support diverse pollinators. The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservations also has a guide on their website for pollinators in our region.
