ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - Though the Fighting Irish have won the last three matchups against the Stanford Cardinal, mistakes made in a 1992 meeting of the two teams is something Irish legend Jerome Bettis has yet to let go of.
During that game, 6th-ranked Notre Dame led 18th-ranked Stanford by 10 at halftime. Despite the lead, the Irish made significant mistakes in the second half, costing them the game.
"We were clearly the better football team, and we let one get away from us," said Bettis. "And I just always felt that that was an opportunity for us to win a National Championship that year. And we let we let that game get away from us and it ultimately cost us."
"It's always, it's the one that got away," he said. "An opportunity that we lost because we didn't take care of business at home and it's always one that's gonna eat at me. And well, in some ways, it's one of those things where you could even use that as motivation, even in your NFL career. Where you remember how that felt, and not want to have that happen again."
