Berrien County Democrats honor Black History with community celebration
Berrien County Democratic Party ST. JOSEPH, Mich. -- The Berrien County Democratic Party is hosting a Black History Celebration on Sunday, Feb. 15, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the BCDP Office.
The event honors the history, culture, and contributions of Black Americans while highlighting how that legacy continues to shape the ongoing work for justice, equity, and democracy in Berrien County.
“Change doesn’t happen behind closed doors—it happens when people show up,” said Angela Bell, event organizer. “This celebration is about honoring Black history while creating space for community, conversation, and meaningful local action.”
The Black History Celebration will feature interactive, hands-on activities for families and individuals, including the I Have a Dream Wall, where attendees can share reflections and hopes for the future.
Guests can explore educational displays highlighting Black leaders and movements from the Civil Rights era to today, enjoy refreshments, and take part in creative activities throughout the afternoon.
Additional highlights include a Justice & Democracy Button Bar, where participants can design custom buttons featuring messages of justice, voting rights, and quotes from Black leaders; a Community Photo Spot; and a Voices of the Community reflection station where attendees can share what Black history means to them and why local engagement matters.
Those looking to turn inspiration into action can visit the Take Action Station to sign up to volunteer, check or update their voter registration, write postcards or letters to elected officials, and create thank-you cards for election workers.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food donation for a local food pantry. Registration is not required but encouraged.
