Benton Harbor High School in the national spotlight
Benton Harbor High School has been shining in the national spotlight for weeks now after a former college coach came out of retirement to lead the football team to its first playoff victory in school history.
And Wednesday, the spotlight was shining on the school once again. One of the seniors on the women’s basketball team announced that she will be signing with the University of Michigan.
Kysre Gondrezick said she picked Michigan over Notre Dame and other Big Ten schools.
Gondrezick said, “I’m really excited and I hope I can make everybody proud and try to represent Benton Harbor the best way I can at the University of Michigan.”
Gondrezick comes from a legendary basketball family. Her father coached basketball at Benton Harbor for 46 years and her sister plays at Michigan State.
And now under her mother's coaching at Benton Harbor High School, she is continuing the legacy.
Lisa Harvey-Gondrezick said, "This university, this program, that staff, was the best fit for Kysre. I just want to give a shout out to them. They did their job, they did their work, and they embraced Benton Harbor so I look forward to great things to come.”
The principal of Benton Harbor High School said all this attention is helping him “Restore the Roar” of the Benton Harbor Tigers.
Reinaldo Tripplett said, “We are grateful to God really for giving the community and the surrounding areas and the national spotlight an opportunity to see who the real tigers are. Because we are a tiger. Tigers are predators, we’re never the prey. But we are very humble and we are very grateful. As the new principal at Benton Harbor High School. It’s been absolutely amazing.”
On Friday at 5:30p.m. on ABC57 we are airing a special report about Benton Harbor High School and how the game of football is changing the lives of people in this community one win at a time.
