UPDATE: ISP requested to investigate police pursuit ending in crash at Cassopolis and Bristol Streets

UPDATE: The Indiana State Police report they've been requested to investigate after a police pursuit involving the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office which ended in a crash Tuesday.

ISP's initial investigation determined an ECSO deputy working off duty as security for a department store at the intersection of Cassopolis Street and Emerson Drive when he was alerted to a possible shoplifter.

The report states the deputy was in uniform at the time of his off-duty job. 

Authorities say the deputy confronted the suspect in the parking lot around 12:13 p.m., Tuesday.

Police say the suspect didn't stop when requested and quickly got into her vehicle, a beige 2012 Buick SUV.

Documents state the suspect then backed up towards the deputy who was on foot, before putting the SUV in drive, and leaving the parking lot.

The deputy stated he lost sight of the suspect as it left. The ISP report states the deputy got into his marked ECSO vehicle and drove south on Cassopolis to find the suspect.

The suspect vehicle was found at the intersection of Country Club Drive and Cassopolis Street. Police say the suspect had been driving east on Country Club Drive before disregarding the stop sign.

The suspect continued south on Cassopolis Street with the deputy following.

Police say as the pursuit approached the intersection of Bristol and Cassopolis Streets, a dark gray Chevy passenger car in the left turn lane to go from eastbound Bristol to northbound Cassopolis began to enter the intersection on a green light.

The Chevy was then struck in the driver’s side door by the suspect vehicle around 12:15 p.m., Tuesday.

The driver of the Chevy, a 17-year-olf girl, was taken to Memorial Hospital for her injuries.

The suspect, a 26-year-old woman, was taken to Elkhart General Hospital for her injuries.

ISP Area II Critical Incident Reconstruction Team has responded to the scene to investigate.

ISP is now handling crash investigation as well as any potential criminal charges from the original incident, the pursuit, and crash.

As of 3:26 p.m., eastbound traffic on Bristol Street remained blocked at Cassopolis Street as well as north and southbound traffic on Cassopolis Street on the south side of the intersection during the investigation.

ORIGINAL STORY: ELKHART, Ind. -- A portion of the Cassopolis Street and East Bristol Street intersection is closed following a pursuit with the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office that ended in a crash.

According to law enforcement, the crash occurred at 12:16 p.m. Tuesday between the suspect and another passenger vehicle. The Elkhart Police Department is assisting with traffic. Indiana State Police is investigating the incident itself.

The identity of the driver involved in the pursuit as well as their condition and that of others involved in the crash are unknown at this time.

Currently, traffic is closed eastbound on Bristol Street as well as northbound on Cassopolis Street.
