After closure in 2020, YMCA reopens in downtown
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The YMCA is back after closing its doors in 2020, the ‘Y’ has picked its workout routine back up, but now, in the heart of downtown South Bend.
Mark Weber, CEO, YMCA of Greater Michiana knows that it’s a necessary location change. “The reality is not everyone can get to a Y-M-C-A facility. So, being in a strategic location like downtown gives us access to so many more families,” Weber said.
The 'Y' is now located at 111 W. Jefferson Blvd. on the third and fourth floor.
The space previously occupied by Beacon Health and Fitness. Now, Mayor Mueller along with members of the town and ‘Y’ welcomed the new addition to the vacated space.
“It’s really something that we know the best is yet to come because there’s some deferred maintenance in this building that we’ve inherited and we are looking to get that addressed as soon as possible and then this facility will be even better,” Mueller explained.
The new ‘Y’ is part of the ongoing plan to strengthen downtown.
“There’s a lot of new residential building coming in. We’ve got folks that are deciding to live here and then commute to larger cities to work” says Courtney Kubly, Director of Business Development, DTSB.
The city is growing and expanding with a proposed plan to invest heavily into downtown with amounts in the billions according to Mayor Mueller.
“Our goal, make sure that downtown is everyone’s neighborhood and it’s safe, welcoming, and vibrant,” Mayor Mueller told us.
The ‘Y’ will have a bunch of programs including fitness classes, personal training and more.
