SOUTH BEND, Ind.--Michiana is seeing a complete flip from the very wet spring. Just a few months ago, it seemed like Michiana saw rain nearly every day. This May has been fairly dry compared to March and April.
South Bend has only seen just over an inch and a half this of rainfall this month. For normal May, Michiana usually receives a little over three and a half inches. We can afford to be a little drier this month because of the copious rainfall in March and April.
This spring, we’ve seen a total of 13.35 inches of rainfall, leaving us with nearly four inches in surplus. These totals will likely be solidified for the rest of the month with the lack of rain chances.
Will this dry period last into the first week of June? Likely, yes. Precipitation Outlooks show the first week of June will see near normal or even possibly drier than normal conditions.
The Drought Monitor shows indications of abnormally dry conditions already creeping into our western and southern counties. If this pattern continues, then we’ll turn our attention to the drought concern.
With all of this sunshine, it is important to stay safe while enjoying the rays. Here are a few methods while spending time outdoors:
- Wear sunscreen to protect from strong UV rays
- Dress in light-colored and loose clothing to protect your skin while staying cool
- Drink plenty of water to avoid heat-related injuries.
In the meantime, stay cool, water your grass and outdoor plants, and enjoy the pleasant as we end Meteorological Spring.
