Weather delay doesn't stop Lakeville's Fourth of July celebration at Newton Park

Lakeville, Ind. -- Thunderstorms temporarily interrupted Lakeville's Fourth of July celebration Saturday evening, but determined attendees stuck around for the festivities, which resumed after nearly a two-hour weather delay.

The annual celebration at Newton Park began under sunny skies as families gathered for food trucks, live music and patriotic festivities ahead of the community's fireworks display.

"They got a lot of food trucks out here, it's just really good. It's a really good time. Plus live music,” said attendee Mary Nemeth. “You can't go wrong.”

As storms moved through the area, however, organizers evacuated the park and directed attendees to shelter in their vehicles because of lightning.

Rather than leave, many families waited out the weather, hoping conditions would improve in time for the fireworks.

During the closure, food vendors relocated their trucks to the parking lot, allowing families to grab dinner while they waited for the park to reopen.

Once the storms passed, the celebration resumed. The fireworks display was pushed back until after 10 p.m.
