Six-year-old shows up at stranger's door after dad crashes motorcycle

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- A probable cause affidavit from the La Porte County Sheriff's Office revealed Dakota Griffin is facing several charges stemming from a motorcycle crash with his 6-year-old son which happened on the night of April 28.
Griffin is charged with Neglect of a Dependent - def. places dependent in situation that endangers dependent, a Level 6 Felony, Operating Vehicle W/ACE of .15 or More W/Passenger under 18 where Def is at least 21 yrs old, a Level 6 Felony, Operating Vehicle w/ Alcohol Concentration Equivalent to .15 or More, a Misdemeanor, and Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangering a Person, a Misdemeanor.
Authorities say on April 28 around 9:13 p.m., a deputy responded to the area of Division and Fail Road for a possible motorcycle crash.
Dispatch said the caller explained that a 6-year-old boy arrived at her residence with a motorcycle helmet, stating his dad crashed somewhere on Fail Road.
The deputy arrived at the scene in the 100-north block of Fail Road and found a black Harley-Davidson motorcycle resting on its left side, facing south. The motorcyclist, later identified as Griffin, was found next to the motorcycle.
The deputy says he tried speaking with Griffin, but due to his condition he could not respond. Griffin was not wearing a helmet during this crash and authorities say he does not have a motorcycle endorsement.
Paramedics arrived and took Griffin to the back of the ambulance. The on-scene deputy then began photographing the crash scene when he noticed several marks in the road.
Based on the markings, the deputy said it appeared Griffin was traveling north on Fail Road when he failed to negotiate a left turn in the road. After falling on its side, authorities say it appears to have slid for about 50 feet.
Another deputy located the 6-year-old boy at the caller's residence. The boy was the rear passenger of the bike and authorities observed he had a laceration on his chin and road rash on his arms. He was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash.
The boy was taken to a local hospital for further medical treatment.
Griffin was later airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend. He suffered severe road rash all over the right side of his body, pain in his right arm, and was bleeding from his left ear.
EMS personnel told on-scene deputies that Griffin didn't smell of alcohol, but later a bystander told deputies the boy said Griffin had "Fireball" prior to the motorcycle ride.
On April 29 deputies were informed that Griffin was currently in the Intensive Care Unit at Memorial Hospital.
It was learned that Griffin suffered bruised lungs, a fractured collarbone, skull fractures, and a brain bleed.
Griffin has a bail review hearing on July 23.
