Buchanan celebrates unity during fourth annual Pride event

BUCHANAN, Mich. -- Hosted by the Buchanan Area Senior Center, this year's festival centered on the theme, "Together We Are Strong," a message organizers said reflects the importance of unity and support within the LGBTQ+ community.

"We've just been really lucky that it's grown as much as it has," said Adam Burck, executive director of the Buchanan Area Senior Center and chair of the Buchanan Pride Committee. "We have 48 vendors this year, so it's awesome."

While the festival featured vendors, entertainment and colorful displays, organizers said the event's purpose extends beyond celebration.

"Our trans brothers and sisters are being attacked at the national level, and our community in general is being undermined by the federal administration," Burck said. "We thought it was important for the community to not be separated, but be together and unified in pride."

Advocates said Pride events provide opportunities for people to connect, build relationships and find support.

"Pride is more than just a party or a place," said Kat Hutton, director of programs at MiGen. "It's such a community-focused thing. It's a chance to get to connect, to learn and to grow with each other."

Hutton said events like Buchanan Pride help remind people they are not alone.

"When things do feel unsafe, remember you're not alone," Hutton said. "You have people out there who want you to succeed, who want the best for you."

Organizers and advocates said they've seen an increase in Pride events across southwest Michigan this year, offering more opportunities for LGBTQ+ community members and allies to gather, celebrate and support one another.
