81-year-old woman found severely injured in home

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - A suspect has been arrested after an 81-year-old woman was found beaten at a home on Twyckenham Drive on Saturday.

Randy Scott, 68, was formally charged with aggravated battery and possession of methamphetamine.

Around 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, police got a call about an unknown problem at a residence in the 1000 block of S. Twyckenham.

When they arrived, they found 81-year-old Judy Annis laying in a pool of blood inside the home. According to court documents, Annis suffered from a number of severe injuries, including two brain bleeds, broken ribs, a punctured lung, and orbital and skull fractures.

As soon as they entered the home, deputies saw Randy Scott allegedly try to burn Annis with a cigar. The house showed no signs of forced entry, and no one else was in the home except for Annis and Scott, who was identified as Annis' acquaintance.

As Scott was detained, deputies reported hearing him say he wanted to say he was sorry but that he wasn't. He was also wearing clothes with blood splatter on them, reports said.

Deputies believe Annis was likely beaten with a broken lamp, and that by the time law enforcement arrived, it had been a while since the beating had started.

Two witnesses reported seeing Scott inside the house on the day Annis was beaten.

After Scott was arrested, deputies found a substance on him that tested positive for methamphetamine, reports said.

He is currently being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.
