4-year-old nearly drowns at Warren Dunes State Park

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- A 4-year-old child remains hospitalized after nearly drowning at Warren Dunes State Park on Tuesday afternoon.

The Berrien County Sheriff's Department and medics responded to Warren Dunes State Park on August 1 around 7:45 p.m. for a possible drowning.

The child, Matthew Ramirez of Palatine, Illinois, was floating and unresponsive when good Samaritans pulled him from the water.

They performed CPR on Ramirez until the ambulance arrived.

The child was transported to Lakeland Hospital, then flown to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.

He is in critical condition.

The preliminary investigation revealed several children were playing in the water and family members believed he had exited the water and returned to the beach with other family members.
