30-year-old man arrested for firearm offenses and resisting arrest

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. -- The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office reports on Wednesday around 1:35 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the area of M40 and M43 in Almena Township on the report of a possible medical emergency.

Callers reported seeing a vehicle on the road's shoulder and a man slumped over the steering wheel.

The report states deputies arrived, located the vehicle, found there were two men inside, and when deputies observed the driver, they recognized him as a known 30-year-old from Gobles, Mich.

Deputies were also aware the driver had a felony warrant for his arrest in Allegan County.

The report states when deputies made contact with the driver, they determined he was not having a medical emergency, but had fallen asleep.

Deputies then asked the driver to exit the car, but he refused the commands, according to authorities.

The report states the man then tried to reach under his seat, causing deputies to pull him from the car to take him into custody.

Deputies then searched the vehicle and found a loaded handgun under the driver's seat where he'd been reaching.

The driver was then taken to the Van Buren County Jail for resisting arrest, felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, and held on the outstanding warrant.

The vehicle's passenger was released on scene.
