2023 Memorial Day parades and ceremonies
A number of communities across Michiana are commemorating Memorial Day this weekend. Here are some of the events you can enjoy as we honor those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
INDIANA
Bourbon
The Town of Bourbon is hosting a Memorial Day service at 10:30 a.m. on May 28 in the town square. More info
Elkhart
The annual City of Elkhart Memorial Day parade is scheduled for May 29 at 2 p.m. The parade steps off on Main Street and Harrison Avenue and ends on Main Street and Lexington Avenue. More info
Michigan City
The Goldstars Tribute Wall, a tribute to fallen soldiers, will be on display at Ames Field from May 26 through 29. More info
Middlebury
American Legion Post 210 is hosting Middlebury's Memorial Day parade on May 29 at 10 a.m. The parade route starts at Middlebury Elementary School and ends at Memorial Park for a 30- to 45-minute service. After the service, veterans will continue their march to Grace Lawn Cemetery, where they will read the names of all veterans laid to rest at the cemetery.
Milford
The town of Milford's annual Memorial Day parade will be held on May 29 at 10 a.m. More info
Mishawaka
The 71st annual Mishawaka Memorial Day Parade returns for 2023 on May 29 at 9:30 a.m. The parade steps off at Third and Main streets, turning onto Mishawaka Avenue before ending at Battell Park. More info
Nappanee
Nappanee's Memorial Day parade and ceremony takes place on May 29 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The parade starts at Nappanee Elementary School and ends at City Hall. A ceremony will follow on City Hall's South Lawn at 11 a.m. More info
New Carlisle
American Legion Post 297 will host a Memorial Day parade and remembrance ceremony at 10 a.m. on May 29. The parade starts at the New Carlisle Fire Department and ends at the New Carlisle Cemetery. A picnic lunch will follow at the post until 1 p.m. More info
New Paris
The New Paris Memorial Day parade and ceremony will be held on May 28 at 2 p.m. The parade steps off at Main and Market streets before making its way to the New Paris/Jackson Township Cemetery. After the parade, a ceremony, featuring Rep. Rudy Yakym III, will be held at 2:15 p.m. at the cemetery. More info
Osceola
The annual Osceola Memorial Day parade is set for May 29 at 8 a.m. The parade will travel down Lincolnway West, between Osceola and Grand avenues.
Plymouth
The City of Plymouth will host a Memorial Day ceremony on May 29 at 10 a.m. at the Marshall County Courthouse. After the ceremony, the community is invited to a wreath ceremony on the Yellow River Bridge followed by a second ceremony at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Rolling Prairie
VFW 9423 will commemorate Memorial Day on May 29. The day begins at 10 a.m. with a ceremony at Rolling Prairie Elementary School, followed by a parade to the Rolling Prairie Cemetery with a service there at 11 a.m. Families are invited to a hot dog cookout at the VFW post immediately after the service.
South Bend
The South Bend Westside Memorial Day Parade is scheduled for May 29 at 8 a.m. The parade begins at the intersection of Lombardy Drive and Ford Street. On May 26, Mayor Mueller will join the community for a street renaming ceremony starting at noon at Lombardy and Ford. More info
Syracuse
Syracuse American Legion Post #223 and the nonprofit Chautauqua-Wawasee will host Taps Across the Water, a Memorial Day tribute, on May 28 at 9:09 p.m./dusk. Buglers will play Taps on Wawasee, Syracuse Lake and Papakeechie Lake. Residents who do not have land on the lakes can take in the ceremony on the shores of public areas, at Lakeside Park or at the Oakwood Resort. More info
Winamac
Winamac American Legion Post 71 and VFW Post 1728 are hosting the annual Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. on May 29 at the Pulaski County Courthouse Memorial. Prior to the ceremony, the VFW and American Legion will visit a number of cemeteries to honor fallen troops. More info
MICHIGAN
Baroda
Baroda's Memorial Day parade is set for May 28 at 1 p.m. The route begins at the American Legion post on 1st Street and ends at Ruggles Cemetery on Stevensville-Baroda Road. More info
Berrien Springs
Berrien Springs’ American Legion Post 85 will host its Memorial Day parade at 10 a.m. on May 29. The parade steps off at the corner of Mars and North Mechanic Street and follows West Ferry Street, Old 31, Madison Street and Bluff Street before ending at the American Legion Post. A ceremony will follow at the Rose Hill Cemetery.
Buchanan
Buchanan's Memorial Day events begin on Saturday with an annual poppy sale to raise funds for veterans at the Auxiliary American Legion-Buchanan Post 51, located at 403 E. Front St. Buchanan's Memorial Day parade is set for May 29 at 10 a.m. The parade will travel along Front Street, starting at the legion and ending at the Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Cassopolis
The Cassopolis VFW Memorial Day parade steps off at 10 a.m. on May 29. A kids bike decorating contest precedes the parade at 9 a.m. in the VFW parking lot. More info
Dowagiac
The Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce will host the city's annual Memorial Day parade on May 29 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The parade begins outside City Hall with a ceremony and travels to Riverside Cemetery. More info
Edwardsburg
The Edwardsburg Memorial Day parade will step off at 11 a.m. on May 29 at Edwardsburg Middle School.
Galien
The Village of Galien's Memorial Day parade starts at 1 p.m. on May 29. The parade begins at the American Legion post and ends at the Galien Cemetery. A short ceremony will follow at the cemetery.
Mendon
The Village of Mendon's annual Memorial Day parade is scheduled for May 29 at noon. More info
Niles
American Legion Post 26's Memorial Day parade will be held on May 29 from 10 a.m. to noon. The parade begins at North State Street and makes its way east before ending at Silverbrook Cemetery. More info
South Haven
South Haven's Memorial Day parade is set for May 29 at 9 a.m. The parade starts at South Haven High School, travels along Center Street to Phoenix Street and ends at Lakeview Cemetery. A service will follow at the cemetery.
St. Joseph
St. Joseph will hold its annual Memorial Day parade on May 26 starting at noon. The parade begins at the intersection of Lake Boulevard and Park Street, traveling down Lake Boulevard until it reaches the John E.N. Howard Bandshell. A short program will follow. More info
Sturgis
The annual Memorial Day parade in Sturgis will step off at 10:30 a.m. on May 29. The parade starts at the VFW on Fawn River Road and ends at Oak Lawn Park on Nottawa Street. A ceremony will take place at Oak Lawn Park after the parade.
