14,000 pounds of chicken donated to Food Bank of Northern Indiana

NOW: 14,000 pounds of chicken donated to Food Bank of Northern Indiana

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- On Tuesday, Dec. 16, Miller Poultry donated 14,000 pounds of frozen chicken drumsticks to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, in partnership with martin Supermarkets.

Miller Poultry explained that this donation is part of an annual effort and reflects the company’s core values of giving back to the local communities that helped build their business.

The chicken that was donated is a premium product, no antibiotics, vegetable-fed, air-chilled, and raised humanely intended to provide a wholesome, high-quality food option for people in need.

The donation will feed hundreds of people at a time when protein is often scarce in food banks and pantries.

Food Bank of Northern Indiana explained that demands have risen significantly, especially after a 43-day government shutdown, leading to one of the largest distribution days in the food bank’s history, second only to the first day of Indiana’s COVID-19 shutdown.

Joel Shepard, Miller Poultry sales manager, stated, "This donation is important because it's ingrained in what we are, as far as who we are as a company too. You know we see this as part of our basic core value as far as company that we need to get back to individuals that are in need, and those individuals and those communities that helped really build who we are as a company so absolutely important to us."
