10-year-old boy drowns on Fourth of July

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. - A 10-year-old boy drowned in the Nappanee public pool just five days before his 11th birthday.

Kymani Collier's brother Keyon yelled for help, but by the time someone noticed, it was too late.

Collier was taken to Elkhart General Hospital and then flown to South Bend Memorial.

Kymani is currently alive, but the parents say he will be taken off the ventilator since his chances are so slim.

The parents said they're going to the hospital Thursday to figure out next steps for funeral arrangements.

Kymani and his brother Keyon attended Chamberlain Elementary School, where school counselors will be available for any students who wish to talk about or process the incident.

If you have a student who would like to talk to a counselor, please call the GCS administration office at 574-533-8631

Chamberlain Principal, Todd Williams, released the following statement.

“Kymani was a bright and energetic student who excelled in math. Kymani has a younger brother, Keyon, who attends Chamberlain. The brothers were very close, and they walked to and from school together every day. Kymani loved making friends with his classmates in Mr. Parga’s room and participating in many different activities with them at recess.”

Nappanee Mayor Phil Jenkins also released a statement.

"Our hearts go out to the family and friends affected by this incident. Weare deeply saddened by this unfortunate event and are fully committed to working with everyone affected by this tragedy."

The family has set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses if you'd like to donate.

We previously relayed info that Kymani was removed from life support already, but that was not the case.
