Your Voice Your Vote: A look at the Republican Primary Race for Michigan's next Governor

On the republican side, it's 10th district Congressman John James vs. businessman Perry Johnson.

President Donald Trump announced last week he is backing tenth district Congressman John James as Michigan's next governor.

"You have to win, John James, you have to win," said Trump onstage during an event in Milford, Michigan.

"I've been endorsed by the president because he understands that I know what it takes to bring resources back to the state of Michigan to make Michigan great again," said Congressman James to ABC57 News.

James is proposing his Freedom Agenda, which he says starts with growth and expanding opportunities for every Michigan community.

He says he will do that through improving education, building safe communities, and eliminating the state's income tax.

"Right now, we are in a state where we are 45th out of 50 in education; we have people who are leaving our state to find better economic situations, and I think that is wrong," James says. "Michigan has all the right ingredients, but we desperately need leadership."

Candidate Perry Johnson is the only Republican opponent left standing following Trump's endorsement of John James.

He is not a career politician.

"I know I'm an outsider," Johnson says to ABC57 News. "I'm taking no donations, I'm not going to have any other special interest groups dictate the policy, because I've spent my whole life bringing quality and efficiency to organizations and to companies."

The businessman says he hopes to take his expertise in efficiency to state government.

His focus is on fiscal discipline and keeping hard-earned money in Michigander's pockets through aggressive government auditing, ending wasteful spending, and tax reform.

"We are going to eliminate the state income tax and reform the property tax without any new taxes," says Johnson.
