Woman shot with gun that was believed to be unloaded

ELKHART, Ind. -- A woman was taken to the hospital after she was accidentally shot early Monday morning, according to Elkhart Police.

Just before 4 a.m., an officer responded to a home in the 2900 bock of Bane Berry Drive for reports of a shooting.

Deputies were already on scene when police arrived and had rendered aid to the victim.

The woman suffered a non-life threatening wound to the leg.

She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

A man at the scene said he didn't think the gun was loaded and accidentally shot the woman, reports said.

Police said the man cooperated with officers at the scene.

The case remains under investigation.
