Woman hit by car in Elkhart has died, child remains in the hospital
ELKHART, Ind. -- A vehicle struck 28-year-old Norma Sanchez Mateos while she was crossing the road with her daughter on Thursday night.
At 11:37 p.m., the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a call for a car vs. pedestrian crash with injuries, and Elkhart City Police Officers and first responders arrived at the scene shortly after.
Mateos and her 2-year-old daughter were struck by a BMW, driven by a 22-year-old man, in the 3300 block of Nappanee Street.
Elkhart Fire Department medics rendered first aid at the scene. They transported mother and child to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.
The 2-year-old suffered a head injury and remains in the hospital receiving treatment. She was in stable condition at last information. Her mother died early Friday morning from her injuries.
The vehicle driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
