PLYMOUTH, Ind. -- The city of Plymouth took the next step forward Tuesday in its mission to meet the demand for more housing in Marshall County.
According to Plymouth Mayor Robert Listenberger, studies show that the county needs around 1,300 new housing options to meet demand.
On Tuesday, Mayor Listenberger, alongside the city council and developers, broke ground on a townhome site in the downtown district.
The currently empty lot on Water Street will soon be converted to 12 two-to-three-bedroom townhomes and a pair of one-bedroom flats.
The $3 million project is expected to wrap up in around a year, with leasing opening up in the fall of 2025.
Water Street Townhomes will be built on the former site of the Gem Theater, which was later moved and turned into The Rees.
Mayor Listenberger also addressed concerns from local residents, confirming that the development is not being built in a flood plain and that more parking will be added to accommodate the building.
The space will also host a small retail addition, providing more boost to Plymouth’s already growing downtown atmosphere.
The development is also located just across the street from the city’s most prominent park, where events and festivals are held year-round.
