Warsaw couple charged with financially exploiting woman with dementia
Eric Hoffhien, Cori Hoffhien WARSAW, Ind. -- A Warsaw husband and wife are facing charges related to the financial exploitation of a woman suffering from dementia over a period of several years.
The suspects, 44-year-old Eric Hoffhien and 49-year-old Cori Hoffhien, are each facing charges of Theft of property valued > $50k, a Level 5 Felony, and Exploitation of an Endangered Adult, a Misdemeanor.
Eric's initial hearing was Thursday morning, while Cori's is set for Aug. 20.
The couple allegedly misappropriated about $70,000 from Eric's mother, along with opening a Kohl's credit card.
According to the probable cause in this case, medical records and evaluations confirm that Eric's mom is an endangered adult suffering from progressive cognitive decline and dementia.
Medical providers also documented Eric's mom lacks the capacity to manage her affairs and requires increased supervision and support.
The PCA states on Oct. 15, 2025, the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office received a report of financial exploitation and identity deception from Eric's mom and her longtime friend, who assisted in speaking on her behalf.
Authorities were told Eric and Cori had been using the mother's identity, Social Security income, and funds without authorization while previously acting as her Power of Attorney.
It was also alleged that an unauthorized past-due Kohl's credit card account had been opened using the mother's name, Social Security number, and address, but had Cori's personal phone number.
Authorities subsequently interviewed Eric's mother and her current Power of Attorney.
Investigators also reviewed investigative files provided by an Adult Protective Services Investigator alongside bank records.
Authorities say the financial records show on Oct. 15, 2021, a mortgage refinance of around $100,000 was executed on the mother's residence.
After satisfying an outstanding tax lien of about $23,000, records show the net proceeds of $75,026.61 were deposited into the mother's bank account on Dec. 2, 2021, where Eric was listed as a joint owner.
The report states the remaining proceeds were misappropriated by Eric for personal use rather than his mom's care.
On Dec. 3, 2021, records show Eric transferred $20,000 from the account and transferred another $50,000 into a Charles Schwab account held jointly by Eric and Cori.
Over the following months, investigators say Eric routinely depleted these funds through unauthorized debit card transactions and transfers, including payments toward a vehicle loan in his name, Rocket Mortgage payments, recurring transfers to a separate person, fast food, smoke/vape purchases, travel expenses including Universal Studios Florida and SeaWorld, and Harley-Davidson.
On Feb. 10, a detective interviewed Eric, during which he acknowledged taking the mortgage out on his mother's house, claiming she signed the paperwork. Eric also admitted some of the funds from his mom's bank account went toward his own family.
On Feb. 23, a follow-up interview was had with Eric, where he admitted he transferred the $50,000 from his mom's bank account into his joint Charles Schwab account.
When confronted with specific unauthorized transactions from the Schwab account, investigators say Eric stated he couldn't recall making those specific payments, but that he would repay the money.
