Walk for Alopecia brings awareness and support to Michiana community
MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- The Michiana community gathered at Central Park for the annual Walk for Alopecia, an event aimed at raising awareness and support for individuals affected by alopecia.
The walk, organized by Jennifer Leahy, a local resident who has lived with alopecia since she was 10 years old, attracted a crowd of approximately 25 participants. The group began their journey at Central Park, winding their way along the riverwalk before returning to their starting point.
"I've had alopecia myself since I was 10 years old, and I myself never found like a community here for it. I've had like pen pals and things that were far away. I've gone to Texas for support groups, but nothing local." said organizer Leahy, "So, I just felt like something local would be great to get more people and get word out for anybody who has alopecia or loved ones that do to come together for that."
To promote awareness, participants were encouraged to wear blue, the designated color for alopecia. Refreshments, including cookies emblazoned with messages of support, were provided to walkers.
Additionally, a raffle was held with all proceeds donated to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.
"I hope that they know we're not alone, and it's not like a sickness that makes you feel ill, or it's contagious or anything like that." stated Leahy, "So, for anybody who's uncomfortable with the way that they look because of it, or anything like that, I hope that we can come together and make those people feel better."
