Vehicle hits 84-year-old pedestrian Friday morning, driver cooperating with police

DOWAGIAC, Mich. -- The Dowagiac Police Department reports it's currently investigating a crash involving a vehicle and pedestrian which occurred Friday around 4:32 a.m.
Officers responded to the intersection of W. Division Street and N. Front Street in Dowagiac for the reported crash.
Police say upon arrival they found the victim, identified as an 84-year-old Dowagiac man, lying in the road.
Authorities along with Dowagiac fire personnel provided medical assistance to the man.
Officers then spoke with the driver, identified as 39-year-old Chris Harter of Dowagiac.
The investigation determined the victim was crossing the street on W. Division Street heading north.
Police say Harter was traveling east on W. Division Street and made a turn onto N. Front Street, striking the victim in the process.
The victim was taken to Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph and is currently listed in critical condition.
Harter was uninjured in the crash.
Police say alcohol and speed were not contributing factors in the crash.
This incident remains under investigation by the DPD.
