Van Buren County Sheriff's Office responds to report of found explosive

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. --The Van Buren Sheriff's Office reports that deputies were dispatched to the 50,000 block of CR 388 in Columbia Township, for a report of a found explosive.

The homeowner at the location located a hand grenade partially buried in the yard, while doing yard work, and it's believed the grenade had been there for multiple years.

The grenade initially appeared to be a training grenade but had suspicious modifications, which deputies then called for assistance of the KDPS bomb squad to the scene.

Through a thorough investigation, they determined that someone modified that grenade into a live improvised explosive device.

The bomb squad technicians transported that device to a safe location, where they destroyed it.
